The National Alliance on Mental Illness will honor DuPont for its commitment to advancing mental health with the Seeds of Hope award at its annual gala and awards celebration in New York City on November 7.
DuPont created the “ICU Mental Health” program to improve employee understanding of mental health issues and the overall emotional health of the organization. The program targets the stigma of mental illness and is designed to encourage employees to recognize a colleague in distress and offer support on a peer to peer level.
To educate employees about the program, JPL created a presentation, facilitator guide and e-learning course. These materials help employees understand and recognize emotional distress, reducing the risk that those suffering from mental illness go unnoticed and feel alone.
“What is most impressive to my team and those who have seen the training materials is the simple, but effective imagery. [JPL] was able to create an easy-to-follow presentation that was a wonderful match to the message we are conveying,” said Paul Heck, global manager of employee assistance and work life services at DuPont.
Because the initiative is global, JPL chose to tell the story with highly visual, illustrated characters representing DuPont employees, with limited onscreen text and narration that can be easily translated. The approach provided a flexible solution to reach diverse audiences, allowing DuPont to maximize distribution around the world.
This year, the campaign will provide a unique learning experience to more than 70,000 DuPont employees in 90 different countries.
“The ‘early returns’ from those who have seen [the ICU program] are extremely positive. In fact, the initial response was positive enough that we changed plans for our Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) region and now all of the focus will be on the ICU program,” said Heck.
In addition, Heck said DuPont will share the project with peers and colleagues in other organizations, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to use the training materials as an example of best practices in the field.
