Sometimes dividing a company against itself is a good thing. At JPL Integrated Communications, Susan Cort, director of communications, and Melissa Washington, director of human resources, said employees often take the initiative to be active during the workday, whether it’s taking walks over lunch or holding meetings on the basketball court. “Epic battle” is how Washington described a recent basketball challenge pitting upstairs against downstairs, complete with uniforms and cheerleaders. JPL also encourages exercise in more structured ways, from company ski days to subsidizing monthly health memberships to offering horseback rides at its company picnics. This summer, the company also is incorporating an Olympic theme in its monthly staff meetings, with teams competing in contests such as circular file basketball, Wii racing, chair relays, Nerf gun archery and computer-mouse throwing.
